Ants
Roughly 25 varieties infest homes, but these insects are identified by their three distinct body regions: head, thorax, and abdomen. Ants can vary in size and color.
Bald-faced Hornets
A nasty relative of the yellowjacket, these hornets are mostly black on their body and have white faces. Bald-faced hornets are typically ½-5/8” in size.
Bees
Bees are closely related to ants and wasps, and are known for producing honey and beeswax. Bee species can range in size from 0.08” long (the stingless bee) to 1.54” long (the leafcutter bee).
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from homes and hotels, to offices and schools. Unfed adults tend to be mahogany in color, whereas engorged bed bugs are reddish brown and nymphs are colorless. Adults are roughly ¼” long.
Boxelder Bugs
Found on and around boxelder trees, the oval-shaped boxelder bugs are black with reddish or orange markings and are usually ½” long in size.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants get their name from their ability to excavate wood to build their homes. They are typically 5/8” in size and usually red or black.
Centipedes
Centipedes can actually have anywhere from 15-177 pairs of legs, and can be yellowish to dark brown in color. They are typically elongated and flattened in shape, ranging from 1/8 – 6” in size.
Crickets
Crickets can range from ¾ - 7/8” long and usually yellowish brown in color. They can draw notice with chirping created by the rubbing together of their front wings, an act done to attract females.
Earwigs
Earwigs don’t actually crawl into people’s ears, but they do eat leaves, fruit, flowers, and insects. These insects are 1” long and narrow, with dark brown coloring and long cerci (clippers).
Fleas
Parasites that feed on any warm-blooded body, fleas are dark reddish-brown and 1/12 – 1/6” long.
Flying Ants
Found on and around boxelder trees, the oval-shaped boxelder bugs are black with reddish or orange markings and are usually ½” long in size.
Millipedes
Carpenter ants get their name from their ability to excavate wood to build their homes. They are typically 5/8” in size and usually red or black.
Mud Daubers
These wasps rarely sting and build their nests out of mud. Mud daubers are black with pale markings and are normally ½ - 1” long.
Pantry Pests
Pantry pests can be Indian meal moths, merchant grain beetles, or other nuisances like mice.
Pharaoh Ants
Usually very pale in color with yellowish to reddish extremities and darker abdomens, pharaoh ants are 1/16” in size.
Pill Bugs (or Rollie Pollies)
Crustaceans that have adapted to living on land, these pests are oval in shape, with seven individual plates on their backs. They are roughly ¾” in size.
Roaches
Cockroaches can be reddish brown in color, with an oval body shape and antennae, and 2” long.
Rodents
Rodents can include animals like squirrels, mice, rats, voles, and prairie dogs.
Silverfish
This expert hider get its name from its fish-like appearance, and is typically silver to brown in color. Silverfish are ¾” long and can run very fast.
Sow Bugs
Similar in appearance to the pill bug, the sow bug can range from ¼ - ½” in size and are dark to slate gray.
Spiders
Common house spiders are usually yellow-brown in color, and can range from 3/16 – 5/16” in size. Other spiders can include long-bodied cellar spiders, brown recluse, and black widow.
Squirrels
Tree squirrels have long bodies with thick fur and bushy tails, and include fox squirrels, gray squirrels, and pine squirrels. They can be white to gray, yellow, brown, or red with pale bellies.
Ticks
These oval, flattened biting pests can start as small as 3/16” and become 5/8” when engorged. Ticks are normally orange or brown with white or gray markings.
Termites
Creamy white to dark brown, termites can be found near the foundation of your home. They are 1/8” long, with long, narrow, oval bodies.
Wasps
Wasps are 5/8 – ¾” in size, and normally are brownish in color with yellow markings on their bodies.
Yellow Jackets
These flying, stinging insects look similar to wasps, but are black and yellow with patterned abdomens, and range from 3/8 – 5/8” in size.
